SUNY’s Red The Dragon Mascot To Get New Look

Red the Dragon is in for a facelift.
Red the Dragon is in for a facelift.

ONEONTA – SUNY Oneonta will unveil a new look for the college mascot during the 2015 Red Day celebration 11 a.m-3 p.m . Friday, Sept. 4, on the main campus quad.

Red the Dragon’s new look will debut at 11:50 a.m. Despite a strong showing in SUNY’s third annual Mascot Madness competition last spring – making it all the way to the final round against Baxter from Binghamton University – Red’s threads were getting worn out. Last year, alumni and students voted on several different designs for Red’s makeover, and the winning costume will be revealed on Red Day.

A celebration of the 125th anniversary of the SUNY Oneonta Alumni Association will be held at 12:15 p.m. in the Morris Conference Center.

A meal will be prepared by Sodexo using recipes submitted by alumni for the Red Dragon Cookbook.  All attendees will receive a copy of the cookbook, compliments of the Alumni Association. Speakers will include Roland Holstead, president-elect of the Alumni Association Board of Directors; SUNY Oneonta President Nancy Kleniewski; Paul Perlman, president of the College at Oneonta Foundation Board of Directors; and Student Association President Kai Malik. Registration is required for this event and may be done until Tuesday, Sept. 1, at www.oneontaalumni.com or by calling the Office of Alumni Engagement at (607) 436-2526.

At 6 p.m., there will be a reception honoring the college’s Alumni of Distinction. This event is by invitation only. More information on the Alumni of Distinction program is available at oneonta.alumni.com/alumniofdistinction.

Red Day will close with a fireworks display outside of the Hunt College Union, near the turf field, at 9 p.m.
