IN MEMORIAM: Lawrence Gennarino, 85;
Navy Vet Retired From Career At Bendix
ONEONTA – Lawrence “Butch” Gennarino, 85, of Oneonta, a Navy veteran who retired from a career at Bendix, passed away peacefully on Oct. 22, 2019, at his home with family by his side.
Butch was born on April 4, 1934, in Oneonta, to Giovanni and Marianna (Tanzini) Gennarino, the youngest of six siblings.
He married Allie (Beecher) on Sept. 1, 1957, at St. Mary’s Church. They celebrated 62 years together.
After graduating from Oneonta High School, Butch enlisted in the Navy and was deployed on the USS Bennington.
He then attended Hartwick College before beginning a career at Bendix (Scintilla).
Butch also served as an interim city code inspector for the City of Oneonta until returning to his career at Bendix.
Butch belonged to and served on several local organizations including, St. Mary’s Church and School, the Knights of Columbus, the Italian American Club, the American Legion, the Oneonta City Safety Committee, and the local Democratic Committee.
All who knew him will remember him for generosity and love of community. Butch was a very family-oriented man who enjoyed several hobbies throughout his life including, fishing, hunting, gardening, woodworking, antique cars, artwork, and reading.
Left to honor and remember Butch are his five children, John Gennarino, Catherine (John) Hanchar, Maria McMullen, Patricia (Dennis) Shea and Joseph Gennarino. He is also survived by nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and his two sisters, Katherine Biss and Frances Hodges.
Butch was predeceased by his wife, Allie Gennarino (January 2019); his parents; his brothers, Ralph and John B. Gennarino; his sister, Amelia Malzone; and his son-in-law, Steven “Mac” McMullen.
Friends are invited to greet the family from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St, Oneonta.
A funeral Mass will be held on at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, at St. Mary’s Church, 39 Walnut St, Oneonta. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.
Memorial contributions in Butch’s name are asked to be made to Helios Care (formerly Catskill Area Hospice) or St. Mary’s Food Pantry.
