Craftsmen From Vermont Install

Historical Carpeting At Hyde Hall

David Hunt and his wife, Charlene, proprietors of Vermont Custom Rug, Bristol, Vt., are installing a newly woven Brussels carpet in the drawing room at the Hyde Hall National Historic Landmark today and Friday. Through the extensive Hyde Hall archive at Cornell, the couple learned Lowe & Connach of New York City did the original carpet in 1831. While no record of the pattern or color remains, the Hunts created patterns that echo moldings on the ceiling and around the doors, and used color – green, chartreuse and gold – that had been used in the original furnishings. David said it was the style when George Hyde Clarke ordered the original carpet to decorate rooms with harmonious colors. The original family dining room and main staircase have already been covered with Damask carpet from Thistle Hill Weavers, Cherry Valley, and Hyde Hall Executive Director Jon Maney said the intent is to carpet the main diningroom and entrance hall next.
