COOPERSTOWN – Beginning Thanksgiving Day, heroin addicts can walk into the Cooperstown Police station at 22 Main and be assigned to a detox and recovery program “on the spot,” Chief Michael Covert is announcing on his department’s Facebook page.

“Bassett Medical Center has committed to helping fast-track people that walk into the police station so that they can be assessed quickly and the proper care can be administered quickly,” Covert wrote.

The program Covert is adopting is based on one developed by Chief Leonard Campanello of Gloucester, Mass., and has met with great success there.  He has been in conversations with OPD Lt. Doug Brenner, who is proposing a similar program for Oneonta.

Since Covert posted his message on Facebook at noon yesterday, it has been “shared” 4,590 times.
