‘Yik-Yak’ Message Threatens

Violence At SUNY, UPD Says

suny sealONEONTA – SUNY Oneonta’s University Police Department over the weekend advised the campus community by e-mail that it had opened an investigation in response to reports of a message posted on the social medium YikYak threatening violence on Monday. 

UPD is working with YikYak, the State Police, the Oneonta Police Department, and Hartwick security to develop information about the origin of the message and the person who wrote it, according to the e-mail.

It gave these details of what is now known: 

  • The alleged message was reported to have been seen between 6:30-7 p.m. Saturday evening.
  • University police did not see the reported message.
  • Those who reported the message were unable to provide a screenshot of it to UPD.
  • The message mentioned a shooting at a school but did not specify a target.

According to an e-mail, “The college greatly appreciates those who brought the message to UPD’s attention.”  It urged anyone with further information about it to call university police at 607-436-3550

An email update to the college community is scheduled for between 9-9:30 a.m.
