IN MEMORIAM: Frank Malzone, 85;
Major Leaguer Got Start In Oneonta
ONEONTA – Frank Malzone, 85, who got his start with the Oneonta Red Sox and became a six-time All-Star third baseman for the Boston Red Sox, died Tuesday at his home in Needham, Mass.
In 1951, he married an Oneonta girl, Amy Gennerino, whom he met in 1949 while playing in baseball here Oneonta; (she died in 2006). For a time, he also owned Molinari’s, the popular local restaurant on South Main Street that fell to Urban Renewal.
I’m a Yankee fan but Frank was one of my favorite players in the 50s. He was a good hitter and a great defensive third baseman. He played in Oneonta New York and Scranton PA!
