ONEONTA – Gary Herzig, Opportunities for Otsego chief operating officer, has circulated a letter to friends advising them he plans to run for mayor this year.

TEXT OF GARY HERZIG LETTER ANNOUNCING INTENTION

Noting his 30-year leadership roles at OFO and the Oneonta Job Corps, Herzig said, “I will use my experiences to shape teams that will build upon recent accomplishments while also addressing our challenges which, left unchecked, threaten the stability of our future.

“Without new revenues, our current deficit spending will erase our reserves. Oneonta’s housing stock continues to deteriorate while affordable housing for working families becomes harder to find. Quality jobs and economic development are much needed and many residents are expressing quality of life concerns.”

Herzig and his wife, Connie, phys-ed teacher at Cooperstown Central School, have raised a family in Oneonta. He is a Rotarian and active in many other aspects of community life.

“Oneonta is at an important juncture,” Herzig wrote. “With effective leadership and community involvement, we can build upon our recent accomplishments and overcome our challenges.”
