SUNY Oneonta Announces New VP;

Chambers To Succeed Retiring Perry

ONEONTA – Dr. Franklin (Frank) Chambers will join SUNY Oneonta as vice president for student development, effective July 1, the college announced this afternoon.

He succeeds Dr. Steven Perry, who is retiring.

Dr. Chambers has more than 20 years of experience working in higher education, most recently as vice president for student affairs at Coppin State University in Baltimore, Md.   Coincidentally, SUNY Oneonta announced Tuesday that its provost, Maria Thompson, was leaving to become Coppin’s next president.

Prior to Coppin, Chambers served in a number of student services positions at Howard University in Washington, D.C., including vice provost for student affairs, interim director for intercollegiate athletics, interim dean for residence life, special assistant to the president and associate director of student activities.

Chambers has served as a panelist for the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and as a presenter and panelist at the Second National Summit on Black Greek-Letter Organizations, A Critical Time for Change:  Strengthening the Legacy, Part III, at the annual conference of NASPA, an association serving student affairs administrators in higher education.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from California State University at Northridge, and a master’s in educational administration and Ph.D. in organizational communications at Howard University.
