HUMAN SOCIETY HAILS MEASURE

Governor Signs Ban

On Declawing Cats

ALBANY – Governor Cuomo today signed the bill banning declawing of cats in the Empire State, a move hailed by he Humane Society of the United States.  New York is the first state to ban the procedure.

“This historic bill in New York is a watershed moment for the declawing issue,” said Humane Society President Kitty Block (cq), “and we hope other states will follow suit by prohibiting this unnecessary convenience surgery.”

Complications from declawing include an increase in biting and litterbox avoidance, which often results in the cat being surrendered to an animal shelter, Block said.

In particular, the Humane Society praised Assemblyman Linda B. Rosenthal,  D-Manhattan, Deputy Senate Majority Leader Michael Gianaris, D-Queen, the Paw Project and “veterinarians across the state for their commitment to prioritizing the health and safety of cats in the Empire State.”

  1. Isn’t there something a little more important in New York other than declawing a cat!how about getting the farmers some help. Get the homeless some help. How to lower taxes for the moderate income family! WOW declawing cats!

  2. Declawing of cats is severe animal abuse. Are you an advocate of animal abuse?
By your comment, you really need to educate yourself about declawing of cats.
Hopefully, you’re not hopelessly beyond the point of education.

Fantastic for Gov. Cuomo. Slowly but surely humanity is becoming more and more civilized and aware (in some aspects).
Declawing of cats is virtually outlawed in Europe except for some very rare medical condition or injury. The US, thankfully, is moving in this direction too. Albeit too slowly.

    How about this:

What if there was detoothing of dogs to avoid the possibility of dog bites of people? And how about detoothing of the more larger dangerous dogs? Wow, what’s the big deal. There are more important things to think about. How about getting the farmers some help. The homeless help. Lower taxes for the moderate income family. WOW! Detoothing dogs!
