ONEONTA – State police confirmed today that Kenneth Robinson, 53, was shot multiple times with a “long gun” in the course of a robbery at his home on Head Road on Thursday, Oct. 10.
“The first responding troopers saw a man lying just inside his door,” said BCI Capt. Scott Heggelke, Troop C, in a 12:30 press conference at the State Police Oneonta Barracks. “The house was on fire, but the trooper pulled him outside, and it was obvious that he was the apparent victim of multiple gunshot wounds.”
Nicolas Meridy, 32, Oneonta, was arrested later that evening and charged with second-degree murder and first-degree burglary. Also charged were three minors, two 15-year-olds and one 17-year-old, all of Oneonta.
A fifth juvenile, age unknown, was also has been arrested and charged with first-degree burglary, although not with murder. According to Heggelke, the minors all knew each other.
“This was not a random act,” said Heggelke. “The victim was targeted, and at least one of the suspects was familiar with him.”
According to the detective, the motive was believed to be robbery. Police did recover firearms, but have not determined if they were the guns used in the murder.
The fire, which started in the back bedroom, is still under investigation, and Heggelke said additional charges may be pending.
“We are confident we have everyone involved,” he said.
