700 ‘Girls On The Run’ Race Under Sunny Skies
COOPERSTOWN – Seven hundred girls from six counties dashed off the starting line at noon today at the Clark Sports Center, the culmination of 10 weeks of – as organizer Sally Trosset put it – “celebrating gratitude.”
The goal, she said, is “to teach girls about self-esteem, making good choices in life,” … of learning “it’s nice to be nice.”

Girls and their families descended on the Clark from Otsego, Delaware, Chenango, Montgomery, Schoharie and Herkimer counties. There were particularly big contingents from Walton (four teams) and Delhi (three teams), as well as good representation from Fort Plain.
The 10 week program involves a series of games – one girl described it as being “a game piece on a big board game,” Sally said – that includes an exercise component.
“Without them realizing it,” she continued, “they are getting in shape in 10 weeks for a 5K run.”
In addition to the 700 girls, another 300 brothers, parents and friends participated in the race, which was held in dry, mild weather under sunny skies.
The event was so well attended the overflow from the Clark parking lots filled both sides of Susquehanna Avenue from Walnut Street to past Brooklyn Avenue, and extended down Walnut to Delaware.
