WELCOME MANAGER TO ONEONTA’
3RD ONEONTA CITY
MANAGER RESIGNS
George Korthauer Will Depart Feb. 7
ONEONTA – Oneonta City Manager George Korthauer has submitted his resignation, effective Feb. 7, City Hall announced a few minutes ago.
Korthauer was hired in August 2017 as Oneonta’s third city manager. He previously served as the city manager of the lake resort city of Petoskey, Mich., for 25 years.
He is the first city manager to leave of his own accord since the city-manager form of government was adopted in 2011. Mike Long, a former Poughkeepsie city manager, and Marty Murphy, Cortland County manager, were forced out. Korthauer’s tenure has been largely uncontroversial.
“Considering the expiration of my contract in August, my leaving now will permit the Common Council, with its many new members, to appoint a city manager of their choosing early-on,” Korthauer wrote in his resignation letter. “It is an honor to have served as city manager in Oneonta and to have worked for and with great people who are talented, conscientious, and dedicated to this community and its municipal government.”
Mayor Gary Herzig stated, “George came to Oneonta with a wealth of knowledge regarding municipal equipment from which our city operations have benefited. I wish George and his wife Brenda much future success.”
Herzig states that he “will be working with our Common Council Members through this time of transition. We have a very dedicated and talented team of department heads and staff. I am certain that they will function at the highest level in providing service to the people of our city during this time of transition.”
George worked as my assistant when I was manager of Glencoe, Illinois, before he went to Petoskey. He was exceptional, competent, and people- oriented.
You were fortunate to have him as your city manager. If you have his current address, I would like to congratulate him.
