ONEONTA –  Maj. Sharon Harford has been named the new commanding officer and minister for the Oneonta Salvation Army. She succeeds Maj. Evelyn Hopping who has been assigned to the Wellsville post in the Southern Tier.

“We welcome Major Harford to our Empire State Division and the gifts she brings to Oneonta. She will bring the love of God and God’s saving grace to those who are in need in the community,” said Major Ronald Foreman, divisional commander for the Army’s Empire State Division, covering all of Upstate New York.

Major Harford comes here from a posting in Clearfield, Pa..

The Oneonta post, at 25 River St., offers dance, singing group and band lessons, a weekly teen group and Kid’s Kingdom, an active seniors program, Bible study, Busy Bees and Red Hatters, along with worship and Sunday school.

The Salvation Army first opened in Oneonta in 1888.

RSS wants taxpayers to pay for it; they trying to circumvent public input and they’re using strong-arm tactics to get approval to start construction. Therefore, I oppose it. RSS wants to build a 64-unit project for low- and moderate-income people that will include 14 apartments reserved for individuals recovering from drug and alcohol abuse. Subsidized rents will range from $520 to $1,067, well below market rates for Oneonta.…
