ONEONTA – Fabulous Beekman Boys Josh Kilmer-Purcell and Brent Ridge will discussed “The 10 Things We Learned About Life From Goats” at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22, at Hartwick College’s Slade Theater in Yager Hall.

The lecture is part of the 2015-16 Hartwick Campus Theme, “Food and the Community.” The event is free and open to the public.

According to their website, “These two former executives from New York City bought a farm and are sharing their experiment in living better lives. After taking in a neighboring farmer and his herd of beloved dairy goats, Ridge and Kilmer-Purcell began producing soaps and cheese. As other neighbors taught them how to farm, the two shared their city-honed skills, including starting a website and Mercantile. The men began working with several other local farmers and artisans to market their goods, and the entire village came together to host seasonal festivals.”

Their efforts began to garner attention in the press, including coverage in the New York Times, Daily News, USA Today), even leading to a reality show, “The Fabulous Beekman Boys,” on Cooking Channel.

In 2012, the duo competed and won the grand prize in CBS’s The Amazing Race.

Today, the two run the Beekman 1802 farm in Sharon Springs, NY, and have become reality television stars. They travel extensively and make frequent media appearances.

“Hartwick’s theme of Food and the Community seeks to examine and celebrate the many ways that food touches human communities,’” said Professor of Biology Mary Allen. “With their marketing skills and media savvy, the Beekman Boys have helped the upstate New York community of food producers and artisans connect to consumers and thus contributed to economic success of the region. They promote community and sustainability through food and other products.”

The Beekman Boys also have a new book, Beekman 1802 Style: The Attraction of Opposites, which will be available for purchase at the event.
