Springfield to stage
‘drive-by parade’
for Fourth of July

SPRINGFIELD – The annual Fourth of July Parade in Springfield Center will not be taking place this year in the usual form, but the parade committee announced Monday, May 24, that all individuals, families and groups in the town of Springfield are invited to participate in a Fourth of July “Drive-By Parade.”
The dates for the drive-by parade are Thursday, July 1, through Monday, July 5.
Judging will take place on Saturday, July 3.
The theme for this year’s celebration is “Essential America.”
According to a media release from the parade committee: “Decorate your home, porch, yard or place of business for Independence Day. Take the opportunity to say thanks to essential workers, show us what you think is most essential about America, or just have fun!”
Parade maps will be available online and also at the Convenience Corner store at the intersection of Route 20 and state Route 80 in Springfield Center. Names and descriptions of entries will be included with the map.
The following prizes will be awarded: first place, $125; second place, $75; third place, $50; honorable mentions, $25.

Participants must be registered to be eligible for prizes. Registration is free. The deadline for entries is June 20.

There will also be a drive-through chicken barbecue on Sunday, July 4, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., or until sold out, at the Springfield Community Center, 129 Co Rd 29A in Springfield Center.
Brooks’ barbecued chicken halves and dinners, whole homemade pies from the First Presbyterian Church of Springfield, and Springfield Fourth of July “Essential America” T-shirts will be available for purchase.
Take-out only. Cash or checks accepted. There will be no pre-orders taken this year.
Chicken halves: $7 each; chicken dinners (includes baked potato, coleslaw and roll): $11 each; pies (strawberry rhubarb, blueberry, pecan, apple, raspberry and cherry): $15.00 each; shirts: $10 each
Proceeds from barbecue sales will benefit next year’s Fourth of July Parade and Celebration in Springfield.
