ONEONTA – “Oneonta, Life Enjoyed,” greeted with some controversy a half-dozen years ago, may be going over the side.

At Destination Oneonta’s annual meeting Wednesday evening, Sean Magee of Trampoline Advertising & Design, Glens Falls, outlined four new branding options, three built around the traditional “City of the Hills” tagline, that will be part of recommendations on downtown revival being prepared by the LA Group, Binghamton, under contract with City Hall.

“These are initial drafts,” Magee emphasized in an interview.  But, he continued, “From our outside perspective:  ‘Life Enjoyed’ – we didn’t know what to make of that.  ‘City of the Hills’ immediately painted a picture for us.”  Also, he said, local people didn’t seem to have much of a commitment to the “Life Enjoyed” moniker.

The four new options are built around four themes:  Arts and Entertainment; Outdoor Adventure; Authentic Oneonta, and Welcome Home.   The reaction from the DO crowd was very enthusiastic, Magee said.

The branding proposal will be folded into LA Group’s recommendations, which will be presented to Common Council, tentatively in April.

  1. …and Oneonta should have NY added so the brand reads “Oneonta NY, City of the Hills”. Why not get the full benefit of the larger context and promote Upstate New York at the same time.

  2. Oneonta Life Enjoyed doesn’t mean anything. It could be anywhere.
In fact, it sounds like life here is over, since it is in the past tense.

  3. Never liked “Life Enjoyed” and “City of the Hills” is an observable designation of our City. We should return to using it by itself or within a new format.

  4. As soon as the City wasted all that money on “Life Enjoyed” half the citizens immediately started calling it “Oneonta, Life Endured…”
