Exhibit Of Tony Mongillo’s Railroad Art
Opens Friday At Oneonta History Center
ONEONTA – Art by Tony Mongillo, whose drawings and lithographs chronicled the D&H era in Oneonta, will be on exhibit at the Oneonta History Center, 183 Main Street, beginning Friday Jan. 29. An opening reception will be at 2 p.m. Sunday the 31st.
The exhibit features Mongillo’s drawings and paintings of trains, as well as other local and personal subjects. Some of the pieces on exhibit are from the collections of the Greater Oneonta Historical Society, while others are on loan from the Mongillo family and others.
Mongillo was born in Oneonta in 1924, grew up in the Sixth Ward, graduating from OHS in 1942. He began to work for the Delaware & Hudson railroad in 1943, served in the Navy from 1943 to 1946, then returned to the D&H, retiring in 1985. He has been drawing since boyhood, working in pencil, in pen and ink, and, later, watercolors.
Also beginning Jan. 29 will be an exhibit on the history of 183 Main Street, home of the Greater Oneonta Historical Society in the oldest brick building on Main Street, in observance of the 150th anniversary of the building’s construction.
“183 Main Street: 150 Years of History” is an adaptation of the 2014 exhibit on the building’s history, which coincided with the installation of the first of the Dietz Street murals depicting the five occupants of the first floor prior to the 2005 opening of the History Center.
The History Center is open noon-3 p.m. Fridays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays, and for special events and by prior arrangement.
