IN MEMORIAM: Lois P. Young, 88;
Active In Cherry Valley Community
CHERRY VALLEY – Lois Irene Proper Young, 88, who ran her own snack bar here in the 1960s and was active in community lilfe, passed away peacefully in her sleep on March 8, 2016.
She was born Dec. 28, 1927, in Roseboom, the daughter of Vernon H. and Bessie F. (Rathbun) Proper. She had siblings: Vernon Proper, Frances Patridge and Rhoda Young.
She married Harold Young on April 14, 1942, in Ames. He predeceased her on Dec. 28, 2004.
She attended schools in Roseboom, South Valley and Cherry Valley. She was employed by DeBeer Baseball factory in Cherry Valley while her family was growing up. She ran her own snack bar in Cherry Valley in the early 1960’s, cashiered at the A & P and Oneida Markets in Cherry Valley and retired from the Great American in Cooperstown.
She was a founding member of the Cherry Valley Ladies Axillary, involved with the Cherry Valley PTA, and was a past member of the Presbyterian Church of Cherry Valley and Springfield, and the Methodist Church in Schuyler Lake.
Lois always had a lot of love to share with her family. She will long be remembered for all the quality time spent with her family and for making each and every holiday special. Her grandchildren will always cherish the times they spent with her and Harold at their camp on Canadarago Lake.
Survivors include three children: Harold (Sonny) Young of Cherry Valley, Kathy (David) Dauchy of Burlington Flats, Karen (Ernest) Whiteman of Springfield Center, grandchildren: Kenneth (Kathy) Whiteman, Richard (Christa) Whiteman, Todd (Nicole) Dauchy, Melissa (Greg) Hacker, Britney (Josh) Bates, Sonya Young, Adam Shroyer, Katrina Babcock, several great grandchildren and great great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and a sister-in-law Lucy Proper.
Besides her husband she was predeceased by her parents, all siblings, and a son Kenny in 1962.
Donations in her name may be made to the American Cancer Society and because of her love of animals please consider the SPCA in Cooperstown.
Funeral services will be Saturday, March 12, 2016 at 11 AM at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley. Visitation will be from 7 – 9 PM on Friday, March 11.
