IN MEMORIAM: Douglas B. VanZandt, 80;
Oneonta Resident Unatego Science Teacher
ONEONTA – Long-time Oneonta resident Douglas B. VanZandt Sr., a retired Unatego High School science teacher, died on May 5, 2016, from medical complications at Loudoun INOVA Hospital in Ashburn, Va.
Douglas was born on Aug. 1, 1935, the second son of Emory and Lena VanZandt. He graduated from Oneonta High School, and he later received a bachelor’s from New Mexico State University and master’s from Syracuse University.
Douglas served in the Army in 1953-56, during the Korean War.
While working at Unatego, he lived in Oneonta and Morris.
Due to a heart condition, he was forced to retire from teaching in 1986, and eventually relocated to Ashburn in Northern Virginia with his wife, Janet, to be
closer to his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife Janet of Berryville, Va.; three sons, Douglas VanZandt, along with his wife Lynn or Purcellville, Va., Kurt, along with his wife Mary of Ottumwa, Iowa, and son Karl, along with his wife
Chris of Herndon, Va., and daughter Serena of Berryville, Va. Also, two nieces, Tanya Pondolfino of Tarpon Springs, Fla., and Yana VanZandt of Oneonta, and one nephew
Robert VanZandt of Chester, Vt. And seven grandchildren: Alexandra and Nicholas of Purcellville; Caitlyn, Audrey and Erik of Herndon; and Natalia and Zacharia of Ottumwa.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert VanZandt in 2013.
Calling hours are 7-9 p.m. Friday, May 20, at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home. He will be laid to rest at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the Glenwood Cemetery.
