54 Gravestones Down

In Hartwick Cemetery

The Hartwick Cemetery, between Wells Avenue and Route 205 at the north end of Hartwick hamlet, was a busy place tonight, as the community came out to inspect damage from a gravestone-toppling spree sometime between sundown Tuesday and sunrise today. In all, 54 stones were reported toppled. The good news, if there is any, is that few stones were actually broken, except a few older ones like the one in the lower right. Many people remarked on their favorite gravestone, notably the stone tree trunk across the top, part of a grove of tree trunks. With some muscle and backhoe sling, most of the stones can be set upright again. (Jim Kevlin/AllOTSEGO.com)
