IN MEMORIAM: Marjorie Smith, 85;
RSCS Librarian For Quarter Century
RICHFIELD SPRINGS – Marjorie H. Smith, 85, Richfield Springs Central School librarian for 25 years, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Sept. 15, 2016, in Focus at Otsego in Index.
Marjorie was born on April 16, 1931, in the Town of Barton, Tioga County, daughter of the late Fletcher J. and Mildred L. (Beebe) Hollenbeck. She was raised in Spencer, graduated from Spencer Central School, and earned a bachelor’s degree as a library media specialist from SUNY Geneseo.
On Dec. 28, 1951, she married Leland K. Smith in the Spencer Methodist Church parsonage. They shared a loving and devoted union of forty-four years until his passing on Dec. 19, 1995.
Before retiring at RSCS librarian in 1991, she inspired the lives of countless children through her passion for education in the library and as National Honor Society adviser.
Marjorie was a member of the Church of Christ Uniting, Richfield Springs.
She was a member of the Dutch Settlers Society of Albany, the New York State Historical Association, and a committee member of Richfield Springs Troop #14 Boy Scouts of America.
Dedicated to her family, Marjorie also enjoyed spending time at the lake with her family, researching genealogy, caring for her flower gardens and lawns, bird watching and traveling with her husband.
Surviving are her four children, Michelle D. Woytowich and Ralph Perry of Herkimer, Roger J. Smith and his wife Tammy of Bloomville, Julie M. Solomon of Norwich, Bradley R. Smith and his wife Susanne of Richfield Springs, a brother-in-law Stephen Smith of Spencer, 13 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Calling hours are 4-7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, at J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 24, at the Allen-Manzer Funeral Home, Spencer, with calling hours beginning at 10 a.m.
Internment will follow at the Evergreen Cemetery in Spencer.
Memorial contributions may be sent to the RSCS Educational Foundation or the Richfield Springs Village Library. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
