On August 24, 1965 he met Gay Green. After a year he proposed and she accepted. They married June 10, 1967. In late August, they sailed for England, flew to Paris and finally flew to their destination, the Soviet Union.
In August 1969, they moved to Oneonta where he began his teaching career at SUNY Oneonta. On January 1, 2001, Gerrit retired after 32 years.

Wonderful professor. I was a student of his in the 80’s.
A very interesting professor and I enjoyed his lectures in the early 90’s
Dr Gantvoort(Gerrit) was a great classmate and a good friend. He supported our high school class of 1958.
Extremely bright but yet very down to earth and a true joy to have a conversation.
He could be a devil too…..red hair and a twinkle In his eye. A true gift to our class .
Gay, his wonderful wife was his loyal partner and together they made a wonderful couple.
