450 Students Visit Today
For New York History Day
COOPERSTOWN – You may have noticed: 450 middle and high school students – plus family members and teachers – from around the Empire State are in Cooperstown today for New York History Day, organized by The Fenimore Art and Farmers’ museums.
History Day uses space at numerous Cooperstown venues for students to present their papers, documentaries, exhibits, websites and performances – in addition to the two museums, the Baseball Hall of Fame and The Otesaga. The awards ceremony is at Cooperstown High School at 5.
The public is welcome to view students’ papers, websites, and exhibits at scheduled viewing times. Documentaries and performance categories are also open to the public at the time of judging. Details at www.nyshistoryday.org
Over 100 historians and educators from across the state serve as judges at the competition in Cooperstown. Their evaluations help those students who advance to the next round to revise their entries. Students placing first and second in their categories are eligible to compete at National History Day in College Park, Md., in June.
Special awards to students are sponsored by many organizations locally and from across New York, including the Abner Doubleday Civil War Roundtable, American Labor Studies Center, Archives Partnership Trust, Cooperstown Graduate Program, Fort Ticonderoga, Hanford Mills Museum, the Hall of Fame, and the Town of Middlefield Historical Association.
State Sen. Jim Seward, R-Milford, has obtained an allocation in the state budget this year for the program.
