IN MEMORIAM: Dorothy Stocking Smith, 94;
Worked At Richfield Springs Department Store
SPRINGFIELD – Dorothy Catherine Stocking Smith, 94, who worked for years at Richfield Springs’ Foreman’s Department Store, as well as for several local families, passed away June 8, 2017 , peacefully at the Fox Nursing Home .
She was born March 2, 1923, in East Springfield, the daughter of Leslie O. Stocking and Ida Mae Barrett Stocking.
Dorothy attended and graduated from the East Springfield Central School.
She married George O. Smith Oct. 1, 1942, in Ilion at the St. Augustine Episcopal Church. George predeceased Dorothy on March 13, 1979.
She worked for Foreman’s Department Store in Richfield Springs for many years. She did domestic work for many people – a very meticulous person for herself and others. She was the cafeteria manager at the Springfield Central Elementary School in Springfield Center for many years. Prior to that she was a cook at the Red Sleigh Restaurant in the summers. She enjoyed working for the Wardwell’s, Smith’s, and Goodyear families for their parties cooking and serving.
Dorothy was a member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Springfield Center before moving to Cooper Lane apartment in Cooperstown. She was very active in the auxiliary and worked on the church supper committees and the church fair.
In November 2013 Dorothy moved to the Hampshire Home.
Survivors include her children, son Robert George Smith, wife Betse; granddaughter Connie Sue Smith Deyoe, great-granddaughter Deanna Louise Smith . Also, daughter Carolyn Jean Elwell, Goodyear Lake, husband Lee Elwell (deceased), and a special friend, Arthur Henry, plus several nephew and nieces.
She was predeceased by her sibling, Jennie Rathbun (older sister) and Leslie M.D. Stocking (younger brother).

Graveside Funeral Services will be Tuesday June 13, at 11 a.m. in the Springfield Center Cemetery, Springfield Center.
