Seward Proposes Extension
Of Pistol-License Deadline
ONEONTA – Citing confusion created by the SAFE Act, state Sen. Jim Seward, R-Milford, today announced he has introduced legislation to extend the deadline for pistol license holders to recertify their licenses with the state police.
“The SAFE Act is one of the most confusing and disputed laws I have seen in my 30-plus years in the legislature,” said Seward. “The pistol license recertification provision, in particular, was not well publicized and many people are unaware of the impending deadline or consequences for not recertifying.”
Compliance is “extremely low,” her said, and more time is needed to get the word out so “law-abiding pistol license holders” can meet the deadline.
Under current law, individuals with pistol licenses issued before Jan. 15, 2013, are required to recertify their licenses with state police by the end of this month. Many licensees report receiving no notification; others report difficulties with the state police website.
Senator Seward’s bill would extend the deadline to March 31. It has been referred to the Senate Codes Committee.
Repeal the S.A.F.E. Act.
I feel the state knew what it was doing by not publicizing the facts… and I feel the state should notify each and every permit holder with pistol licenses issued before Jan. 15, 2013 to let them know how, where and when to comply.
