IN MEMORIAM: Charles G. Green, 77;
Plumber, 17-Year Custodian At CCS
COOPERSTOWN – Charles “Charlie” G. Green, 77, passed away surrounded by his family Saturday morning, Jan. 19, 2019, at Bassett Hospital following a brief but bravely fought battle with cancer.
He was born Charles George Green on Aug. 13, 1941, in Yonkers, a son of Harry Albert Green, Jr. and Lena Krisch Green. As a young child, Charlie and his family moved from Yonkers to Fly Creek and lived in a home on Fork Shop Road. They later moved to a farm located on Bissell Road, which at the time was known as Stone House Road.
Charlie first attended a schoolhouse in Fly Creek and then Cooperstown Central School, graduating with the Class of 1959. Soon after graduation he enlisted in the Army and served his country until receiving his honorable discharge on Sept. 30, 1965.
He attended the State University Agricultural & Technical College at Delhi, where he earned vocational certificates in plumbing and heating and carpentry. He was first employed by The Chicago Pneumatic Tool Co. in Utica, and then briefly worked for W.L. Taylor & Sons before working for 14 years as a boiler operator at Bassett. He then went to work for the Cooperstown Central School District and was employed as a custodian in the schools for 17 years until he retired.
Charlie always enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing in Oaks Creek. When his sons were younger he was very active with Troop 1254, Boy Scouts of America and accompanied the Scouts on many camping trips. He was also a very faithful and dedicated member of the Fly Creek United Methodist Church, as well as the Clark F. Simmons American Legion Post No. 579 in Cooperstown.
Charlie will be greatly missed by his wife of 43 years, Lynn Adele Decker Green, a native of Staten Island. They were married June 14, 1975, in a ceremony at the Fly Creek United Methodist Church, and for many years Charlie and Lynn lived on Christian Hill, where they raised their family. Just recently they moved into the apartments on Chestnut Street in Cooperstown.
Charlie is also survived by three sons, Brian Green of Tucson, Ariz., Kevin Green and wife, April, of Fly Creek and their children Riley, Emma, Gabby and Griffin, and Alex Green of San Diego, Calif.; a brother, Henry A. Green and wife, Deborah, of Cooperstown; five nieces and a nephew, Megan, Natalie, Leslie, Amy, Angele and Jeffrey and their families; and many cousins in New York and New Jersey.
In addition to his parents, Charlie was predeceased by his sister, Barbara Lena Green, who died Aug. 7, 2007.
A service in celebration will be offered at 3 p.m. on Friday, June 14, at the Fly Creek United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Sharon Rankins-Burd, pastor, officiating.
As an alternative to flowers, the Green family respectfully requests that donations be made in memory of Charlie to the Fly Creek United Methodist Church, PO Box 128, Fly Creek, NY 13337.
Arrangements are under the care and guidance of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
Rest in peace, Charlie. ❤
