Sidney Troopers Handled Mishap

Amish Tot, 3, Falls Out

Of Minibus; Hurt, OK

KIRKWOOD – A 3-year-old Amish child fell out of a minibus yesterday afternoon on I-81 southbound near Kirkwood, Troop C at Sidney is reporting.

The boy suffered cuts, bumps and bruises, but was alert and crying at the scene, the troopers said. He was treated at Wilson Medical Center.

The call was received at approximately 5:03 p.m. by Broome County 911. Troopers, the Kirkwood Fire Company, Five Mile Point Fire Company, Great Bend Hose Company 1 (Pennsylvania) and Broome County Ambulance quickly responded to the scene.

A preliminary investigation revealed that two minibuses with several members from an Amish community from Lancaster Pennsylvania were traveling south on Interstate 81. The boy was at the back of the first bus with other children when he leaned on an emergency window.

The emergency window opened and the child fell out onto the Interstate near mile marker 2 in Kirkwood. The buses immediately turned around traveling northbound then back southbound and located the child running along the shoulder of the Interstate.
