Bat tests positive
for rabies in Oneonta

STAFF REPORT • Special to www.AllOTSEGO.com

A bet has tested positive for rabies in Oneonta on Wednesday, Sept 22, according to the Otsego County Department of Health.

Rabies is fatal once symptoms appear but is treatable post exposure.

The DOH asks that people not leave windows open without screens and make sure they’re tight, as bats can get into very narrow spaces, even ones as small as a dime.

A bat that is found in a person’s home should be tested for rabies and can be captured if a person has direct physical contact with the bat, is in the room with a sleeping person or unattended child, or found with someone under the influence of drugs or alcohol or some kind of mental impairment.

Call the DOH at  607-547-4230 for more information on rabies.
