IN MEMORIAM: Bruce N. Buffett, 66;
Cooperstown Central Standout Athlete
COOPERSTOWN — Bruce Nathaniel Buffett, 66, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 24, 2019, of natural causes at his home in Norfolk, Va.
Buffett was born in Huntington, Long Island, on Jan. 13, 1953, and was proud of the fact he was descended from three families who settled on Long Island in the 1630s, the Buffett, Conklin, and Sammis families. He was named Bruce Nathaniel, continuing the Buffett family’s practice of naming their sons Nathaniel for more than the past 300 years.
He was the son of Earl Nathaniel Buffett, Jr. and Jennie Sammis Buffett who preceded him in death.
Bruce grew up in Cooperstown after his family moved here in 1956 from Huntington. He graduated from Cooperstown Central High School in 1971, having lettered in football, basketball, baseball and track. He served as co-captain of the 1970 Center State Conference Champion football team. He thought of himself as a true Redskin, never forgetting CCS, the teaching staff, friends and classmates, and especially fellow student athletes.
He attended the Coast Guard Academy and the Albany Medical Center Hospital School for Nursing. Buffett was employed in construction, by George Mitchell Moving & Storage, the Delaware & Hudson Railroad, and the Walmart Distribution Center in Sharon Springs.
Bruce is survived by four children, Nicole Stevens Hager; Erin Redden and her husband Brandon and their sons, Kilian and Murphy, of Cherry Valley; Matthew Buffett of Half Moon; Anne Dolezel, husband Mat, and daughters, Georgia and Hartley, of Latham. Bruce is also survived by his four sisters, Sandra Schecher, Lynda Morris, Laurie Kearns, and Lisa Leslie and their families.
A Service of the Burial of the Dead with Holy Eucharist will be celebrated by the Rev’d Dane Boston on Friday, Dec. 27 at 2 p.m. The committal service and burial will take place next Spring in Lakewood Cemetery, Cooperstown.
Those who so desire may make memorial donations in memory of Bruce to The All Souls Fund, Christ Church, Episcopal, 69 Fair Street, Cooperstown, NY 13326. Letters of condolence may be sent to Mrs. Erin Redden, 169 Honey Hill Road, Cherry Valley, NY 13320.
I thought of Bruce as one of my best friends as we grew up together in Cooperstown. Bruce was one of the kindest people I ever had the pleasure of knowing he will be missed. My heartfelt condolences to his family.
