IN MEMORIAM: Celin V. Schoen, 85;
Hartwick Grad Was Red Cross Official
HOBART – Celin V. Schoen, 85, of Hobart, a journalist and director of the American Red Cross, Delaware County chapter, until her retirement, passed away peacefully, early Friday morning, Nov. 4, 2016, at Bassett Hospital after a long illness.
Born on July 24, 1931, in New York City, she was the daughter of the late John and Dorothy (Chenowyth) Vaernewyck.
Celin was married to Frederick Schoen on Jan. 3, 1955, a union that lasted nearly 55 years until his passing on Oct. 23, 2010.
Mrs. Schoen was a graduate of Hartwick College and received a master’s in Journalism from Boston University. In addition to her work for the Red Cross, she was a columnist for newspapers in Delaware and Otsego counties.
Celin enjoyed gardening, cooking international foods and valued education and history. She taught French and was an active member of the Hobart Historical Society and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She enjoyed acting and was instrumental in the organization of the Hartwick College Drama Club.
Celin was a charter member of the international civic organization, The Inner Wheel, in Stamford and Hobart and the Hobart Rotary Club, and was a member of the United Methodist Church of Hobart and the United Methodist Women’s group at the church.
Besides her husband, Fred, Mrs. Schoen was predeceased a son: Robert W. Schoen; and a brother: E. Vaernewyck.
She is survived by one child: Roger Schoen of Raleigh, N.C.; grandchildren: Erica Acord of Augusta, Maine, Ellen (Gary) Brockwell and Craig Schoen, both of Petersburg, Va., Maria Schoen and John Schoen both of Garner, N.C., and Darlene (Jonathan) Van Tilburg of Hobart; one great-grandchild: Carter Wilson of Augusta, Maine; daughter-in-law: Carol Schoen of Hobart and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Calling hours are 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, 40 Cornell Ave., Hobart. A celebration of Celin’s life will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Hobart United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dee Stevens officiating. Burial will follow at Locust Hill Cemetery, Hobart.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross or the Heart of the Catskills Humane Society.
