IN MEMORIAM: David J. Hamwey, 94;
Owned Riverview Motel, Grist Mill Store
ONEONTA – David J. Hamwey, 94, who for years owned and operated the Riverview Motel and Grist Mill Country Store with his wife Margaret, passed away July 29, 2017, at Bassett Hospital.
He was born Feb. 22, 1923 in Mount Vision, the son of John and Grace (Peters) Hamwey, and raduated from Oneonta High School with the Class of 1942. He was an Army veteran. He married Margaret Cooper on Sept. 24, 1944, in Oneonta.
In addition to running the motel and store, he was also employed at SUNY Oneonta in the maintenance department, retiring in 1990. David was a professional woodworker and cabinet maker, building and customizing his homes and businesses. He and his wife enjoyed riding his motorcycle whenever possible.
In addition to his wife Margaret, survivors include children David J. Hamwey Jr. of Graham, Wash., Timothy A. Hamwey of Worcester, and Janice M. (Bruce) Smith of Oneonta; grandchildren Jason, Jared, Jamie, Elizabeth, Morgan, Bella, and Eric; great-grandchildren, Nathan, Harley and Brooke; many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by seven siblings.
A time for visitation will be 11 a.m. to the service at noon on Wednesday, August 2nd at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Judith A. Thistle, officiating.
The interment will follow at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.
