Southside Woman Active In Community

Doreen McCrea

ONEONTA – Doreen K. McCrea, 86, of Southside Oneonta, a sociable woman who enjoyed working in retails, died peacefully Dec. 21, 2017, at Fox Hospital, surrounded by her family.

She was born on March 4, 1931, in Davenport. She was the daughter of the late Raymond and Marian Rider, and grew up on the Rider farm in Davenport Center.  She graduated from Charlotte Valley Central School.

Doreen married John E. McCrea on Sept. 11, 1954.

After raising her four children she began working at Fashion Bug. She loved this job and it was a place where everyone that came in became her friend. She loved to socialize. One of her favorite things was selling pumpkins at her house because she was able to talk to everyone who stopped by.

She was a member of the Charlotte Valley Presbyterian Church, Davenport Senior Citizens, Pindars Corners Ladies Auxiliary, and Fox Care Center Coffee Club.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, John; four children, John McCrea Jr. (Moira), Debbie Meyerhoff (Garth), Mark McCrea (Karen), and Tammy Shaver (Al); seven grandchildren, Christopher, Adam, Morgan, Kiely, Cameron, Marissa and Megan; five great-grandchildren, Parker, Thea, Metta, Mason, and Colton; her extended family the Shavers, and her guardian angel, Lisa Martin.

Visitation is 5-8 p.m. this evening, Wednesday, Dec. 27, at Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 28, at Charlotte Valley Presbyterian Church, Davenport.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Charlotte Valley Presbyterian Church, Main Street, Davenport, NY 13750.
