Hartwick Administrator, Attorney’s Wife

OTEGO – Local funeral services will be Wednesday, May 22, for Doris H. Reeves, 94, widow of Attorney Frank Reeves an honored Hartwick College administator, who passed away Feb. 18, 2019, in Redding, Calif., where she had been living near her daughter for the past 10 years.

Married in 1950, the Reeveses spent most of their married life on the family farm in Otego, where they raised their daughter, Barbara.

Doris was a wonderful lady, beloved wife and mother, teacher, adviser, administrator and dear friend to many.


Doris was born in Pennsylvania, one of six siblings.  She graduated from Kingston Township High School and East Stroudsburg College in Pennsylvania before relocating to Otego to teach/coach. Later she obtained her master’s degree and became a high school guidance counselor in Gilbertsville and Unadilla.

In 1965, Doris started working at Hartwick College’s administrative team, and held numerous positions: assistant to the Dean of Women, director of Orientation and Testing, coordinator of Student Advisement, director of Social Activities and director of Parent and Community Relations.

In 1990, Doris was the recipient of the highest award bestowed by the Hartwick Alumni Association, the Meritorious Service Award. After 35 years of service at Hartwick, Doris retired when she was 79, and Hartwick College continued to hold a special place in her heart.

While living in upstate NY, Doris was very active in many community organizations, her church, Civic Club, Eastern Star, Delta Kappa Gamma, AAUW, and many others. Doris was known for her faith, strong work ethic, uplifting personality and a caring and generous spirit.

Doris is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Dennis Howell; and the families of Brian and Scott Howell.  Doris was predeceased by her parents; all of her siblings; and her husband.

A funeral service for Doris will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, May 22, at St. James’ Episcopal Church in Oneonta. Committal services will follow in Otego Evergreen Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Doris Reeves to St. James’ Episcopal Church and/or Hartwick College for the Doris H. Reeves Endowed Scholarship Fund.
