IN MEMORIAM: Florence W. Brown, 95;
2012 Springfield Parade Grand Marshal
EAST SPRINGFIELD – Florence W. Brown, 95, former long-time Town of Springfield tax collector and grand marshal of the town’s 98th Fourth of July Parade, passed away Tuesday, July 11, 2017, at the St. Johnsvillve Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.
She was born on Nov. 7, 1921, in Canajoharie, to William and Nettie Mac (Higgins) Wells. She married Adelbert (Sam) Brown in Canajoharie on May 26, 1946.
Florence, known as Flossie to many, was employed by Bankers Trust, formerly First National Bank of Cooperstown, and retired in 1985. She then became town tax collector for 25 years.
While working, she was also a Cub Scout den mother.
As an avid reader and card player, Florence worked at the General James Clinton Library and the Springfield Library, and was a member of the Club of Ten Pitch Club. She was honored for her service to her community when she and Frank Van Auken were Co-Grand Marshalls for the 98th Springfield 4th of July Parade.
Florence was predeceased by her parents, husband, eight sisters and their husbands and a great-grandson, Cody. She is survived by her three children, Judith (Scott) Kolstad, Alan (Maria) Brown, Joyce (Steven) Toner, eleven grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 15, at the Springfield Presbyterian Church, with Lyman Johnson officiating. Burial will be private.
