ONEONTA – The runner hit by a car on West Street in front of Hartwick College is in stable condition and undergoing surgery at Bassett Hospital following last night’s accident.

Daniel Gilbert, 21, a Hartwick College senior originally from Andover, Mass., was hit by a car driven by Kathleen Feeney, 34, Oneonta, city police report.

According to Oneonta Police Lt. Douglas Brenner, a group of runners was crossing West Street by the entrance to Hartwick College when Gilbert allegedly hesitated before crossing.

He then ran into the road, was struck by Feeney’s vehicle and went over the hood through the driver’s side windshield, Brenner said; when the car came to a stop, he fell to the pavement.

He was airlifted to Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown and has undergone surgery for several broken bones.  Feeney was also taken to the hospital.

“Growing up on Ford Avenue, we called that intersection ‘crash corner’,” said Brenner.  “They moved the wall back and widened the intersection since then, but the whole layout is bad and it always has been.”

An investigation is being conducted by the New York State Police Accident Reconstruction Team, but drugs and alcohol have been ruled out as a factor in the accident.  No charges have been filed at this time.
