ONEONTA – Martin D. Murphy, Cortland County administrator, will be appointed Oneonta’s second city manager at this evening’s Common Council special meeting.
“My wife and I are thrilled to be coming to Oneonta,” Murphy said in a quote included in a press release issued by Mayor Dick Miller this afternoon. “We began looking at real estate on Wednesday in hopes of this decision and we are anxious to move and get started.
“Oneonta is a wonderful place with great strengths that provide an excellent platform for dealing with challenges all New York State municipalities face,” he continued. “I’m confident I can add significant value to the city’s efforts to enhance its future.”
Murphy succeeds Mike Long, who retired at the end of May after 18 months in the job. The new manager will be paid $110,000, or $10,000 less than Long.
Murphy has been Cortland administrator since 2010, and previously had been Saranac Lake village manager for three years. Prior to that, he had spent 18 years in the City of Ogdensburg, administering the Empire Zone, then as executive director of OGF Development Corp. For 14 years, he was Ogdensburg’s director of planning and development.
He holds a master’s in public administration from SUNY Brockport and a bachelor’s from SUNY Plattsburgh.
In the press release, Miller said he expects “strong leadership and guidance to city employees” from the new city manager. “Now that this appointment is behind us, we can focus our full attention on such issues as 2015 budget preparation, labor negotiations, housing, economic development and capital planning. I look forward to Martin’s contributions and to working with him as a colleague.”
