IN MEMORIAM: Jane Hribar, 80, Fly Creek;
Retired From Bassett To Care For Husband
FLY CREEK – Leta Jane Hribar, 80, of Fly Creek, died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2017.
Born at home on Sept. 8, 1936, she was the daughter of Bower and Grace (Allison) Weir. She attended Taylor Town School, a one-room school house on County Highway 26, and graduated from Cooperstown High School, Class of 1956. She married Robert J. Hribar, who she loved to say was born one day after her, which made her the boss.
Jane was, throughout her life, simply one of the hardest working people you would ever meet. After high school, she began working at Rhobar Poultry Farm in Fly Creek; thereafter, she and Bob ran their dairy farm for five or so years, and she worked daily alongside him in the fields and barn. After farming, Jane worked for years cleaning many area houses and businesses. She was subsequently employed at Bassett Hospital for 20 years in the housekeeping department, where she touched the lives of many and developed many lasting friendships.
She retired from Bassett in 1998 to care for Bob, who had suffered a stroke. She was his caregiver virtually up to and until the last weeks of her life. It was said that Bob was her love and “only hobby” – she was absolutely devoted to him.
Jane loved her pets – her cats, dogs, sheep, and every kind of bird and wild creature. She insisted on feeding the birds year-round. She was the nurturer of her family and of everything in her care. She loved to visit with people and was known for her “feisty” nature and opinions. You always knew where Jane stood on the matter at hand. She was “a force to be reckoned with”.
She was a member of the Fly Creek Valley Grange, Four Peaks Snowmobile Club, the Cooperstown Native Daughters, and St. Mary’s “Our Lady of the Lake” Roman Catholic Church.
Jane is survived by her husband, Robert J. Hribar, and by her four children, William A. “Billy” Hribar (Donna) of Fly Creek; Deborah E. Shaughnessy (Patrick) of Conesus; Patricia J. Hribar of Burlington Flats; and Franklin B. Sliker (Thomas) of Fly Creek; her six grandchildren and six great grandchildren, William Hribar, Jr. (Megan) and their daughter Chelsey, of Fly Creek; Jeremiah Hribar (fiancée Heather) and their children Liam and Cole, of Fly Creek; Briana Simonds (Jordan) and their son Adam of Westville; Heather Cross and her children Brian and Ryder of Ukiah, CA; John Shaughnessy of Henrietta; and Ben Shaughnessy of Conesus. She is also survived by her sister Emily Thorn of Cooperstown; her nephews and nieces Jack Thorn (Barbara) of Hartwick; Judy Jackson (David) of Milford Center; and Janice Gage (Jerry) of Hartwick; as well as by many cousins and friends. Jane was predeceased by her sister Ruth Curran; half-sister Thelma Hatch; half-brother Vernon Kane; her parents, Bower and Grace Weir; and her in-laws, John and Catherine Hribar.
Calling hours were Tuesday, Sept. 12. The Liturgy of Christian Burial was Wednesday, Sept. 13, at St. Mary’s “Our Lady of the Lake” Roman Catholic Church, with Father John P. Rosson, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Index.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that those who so desire make donations in Jane’s memory to either the Fly Creek Fire Company, PO Box 218, Fly Creek, NY 13337 or to the American Cancer Society, 13 Beach Street, Johnson City, NY 13790.
Arrangements are under the guidance of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown, NY.
