John D. Cook

ONEONTA – John D. Cook, Jr., 57, a security guard at Oneonta Job Corps for several years, passed away Saturday, March 4, 2017, at Fox Hospital.

He was born Aug. 9, 1959, in Portsmouth, N.H., the son of John D. Cook, Sr. and Joan (Bennett) Cook.

John loved his motorcycle, working on vehicles and fishing and boating.


John is survived by his mother, Joan Thompson, Oneonta; two children, Patty Cook, Oneonta, and John David (Breanne Cassiday-Cook)Cook, Battle Creek, Mich.; 1 granddaughter, Kaydeen Cook, Oneonta; siblings, Richard (Etta) Cook, Worcester, Patty (Bruce) Brown, Laurens, William (Jolene) Thompson, Oneonta, Cindy Thompson, Oneonta,  and Russell (Heather) Thompson, West Exeter; as well as several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be 5-6 p.m. Friday, March 10, 2017, at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home. Memorial services will immediately follow at 6 p.m., with the Rev. Bruce Halstrom officiating.

Memorial donations may be made to Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc., 1 Birchwood Drive, Oneonta, New York 13820 in memory of John D. Cook, Jr.

Riverside Students Plant Apple Trees, Help Restore Piece of Oneonta History ONEONTA On Friday, April 28, the City of Oneonta planted an apple orchard on the Swart-Wilcox House Museum property with the help of Riverside Elementary School students.
