IN MEMORIAM: Julia Georgia, 98;
Oneonta Native Raised 11 Children
ONEONTA – Oneonta native Julia Agnes Georgia, 98, who raised nine daughters and two sons in Unadilla, passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 20, surrounded by her daughters.
Julia was born in Oneonta on May 29, 1918. She married Harold Georgia in Inglewood, Calif., in 1943. While he served in World War II, in part as a prisoner of war, she lived at her parents’ home in Oneonta. When he was released in 1945, he met his daughter Joanne for the first time.
The couple then moved to Unadilla and settled there to raise their family.
In 1978, she moved to Binghamton to live with her daughter Dorothy and her family, where she remained until her passing. She enjoyed living her life to the fullest. She loved to travel with her close friend, Georgia Lynch, (as it happened, Julia’s maiden and married names.)
She was a member of Sts. John & Andrew Church in Binghamton.
She is survived by her nine daughters, Joanne (Joe) Embury of Tennessee, Barbara Vill of Binghamton, Cheryl Hesco of Binghamton, Martha Orshal of Vestal, Connie (John) Roberts of Nevada, Mary (Bart) Sheldon of Otego, Elaine (John) Casey of Bainbridge; Patty (Gerhard) Schwenke of Florida, and Dorothy (Martin) Kilmer of Binghamton, with whom Julia resided; a son, David Georgia of Binghamton; and a daughter-in-law, June Georgia of Norwich; she had 35 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Julia was predeceased by her husband Harold Georgia in 1968; her parents, James B. and Frances L. Lynch; brothers; Walter, Joseph, and Francis, and their wives; Agnes, Carmen. She was also predeceased by her son, Doug Georgia and her son-in-law, Tom Vill; four grandchildren, Alisha Sheldon, Laura Orshal, Aaron Casey, and Eric Roberts whom she loved very much.
The funeral mass was at 10 a.m. today at St. Mary’s Church, Oneonta, with interment in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Emmons.
