IN MEMORIAM: Kitty Oliver, 92;
Leaves Many Friends In Oneonta
ONEONTA – Kitty Oliver, 92, passed away on Monday, Dec. 18, 2017, at St. Margaret’s Care Home in Hawick, Scotland, leaving many friends behind in Oneonta.
She was born Jan. 6, 1925, in Hawick, Scotland. She was an outstanding athlete in her youth and was a high school track and field champion. Her brother, Bill McLaren, was the men’s champion the same year. He went on to become an internationally renowned TV sports commentator.
In her later years, she became heavily involved in local arts and volunteer work.
The mid 1990s brought her on the first of many visits to Oneonta, to see her family. Over the years she formed many friendships in the area and became a familiar visitor. Some of her favorite spots at the time included Elena’s Bakery, Iannelli’s Restaurant, The Autumn Cafe, The Fly Creek Cider Mill and The Otesaga. Kitty was always appreciative of the warm and loving welcome she received in Oneonta, a community she grew to love as a home away from home.
Kitty was elegant, kind, and loving. She was always the best-dressed person at a function and made you feel as if you were the only person in the room.
She is survived by her son, Cameron Oliver; her daughter-in-law, Susan Binney; her two grandsons, Ian and Finlay Oliver; along with many cherished friends she made while visiting New York.
A memorial service will be held for Kitty at 3 p.m., Saturday, November 3, at St. James Church, 305 Main Street in Oneonta with Father Kenneth Hunter officiating. A reception immediately following the service will be held at the church. The family invites you to come and share memories of a well-loved woman.
