COOPERSTOWN – Local police have been alerted by Village DPW Superintendent Brian Clancy a “very large crowd” is possible for next Friday’s (the 8th) auction of the furnishings and other contents of the Cooperstown Motel – including potentially valuable baseball memorabilia – and to plan accordingly.

The auction, by MacFadden & Sons of Sharon Springs, begins at noon.

The motel, at Beaver and Chestnut, is at the “major access point” to Bassett Hospital, according to an e-mail from Chief Michael Covert to Rob O’Brien, county 911 director.

“In the event of an emergency, or EMS entering into the village in an urgent manner,” he wrote, “please feel free to advise us and we could escort them into the hospital. Otherwise, please try to direct them to approach BMC via Delaware Street if coming in from the west or north of the Village”

Covert also conferred with Clancy, who is planning to place no-parking signs around the motel to keep traffic flowing.

“I will have two patrols working that day during the auction,” Covert e-mailed to Rob O’Brien, the county’s 911 director.
