IN MEMORIAM: Mary Bassler, 94;

Worked For 28 Years At Otesaga

COOPERSTOWN – Mary Caroline Elwood Bassler, 94, who worked for decades at The Otesaga, passed away on Dec. 4, 2016, at Woodside Hall, Cooperstown, where she had lived since 2013.

Mary was born on Oct. 23, 1922, in Cherry Valley, daughter of Ellis and Mary (Yost) Elwood. She graduated from Cherry Valley High School, and in 1941 married John Bassler.  They had three children, Edwin, Mary, and David.

Mary worked for The Otesaga for 28 years and as a crossing guard for Cherry Valley schools.  She also worked at the Red Sleigh Restaurant on Otsego Lake and the Central Hotel in Cherry Valley, as an information attendant for Otsego County, and as a volunteer for 18 years for Meals On Wheels.

She enjoyed playing the trombone in the Cooperstown Community Band in the late 1950s and early 1960s.  Mary was a member of the 1st Presbyterian Church of Cherry Valley.

Mary is survived by her two sons, Edwin and his wife Maureen Bassler, of Cazenovia, and David of Fly Creek.  Her three grandsons, Eddie, Kevin and Scott, three great-grandsons, and one great- grand-daughter.

Mary was predeceased by her parents; husband John, and daughter Mary.

There will be a graveside memorial and committal service for Mary, in the summer at the Cherry Valley Cemetery.  The date and time will be announced.

Killer Knapp Dies In Prison; Guilty In SUNY Coed’s Death ONEONTA – Ricky Knapp, the man convicted of the 1977 death of SUNY Oneonta student, has died in Mohawk Correctional Facility, according to prison records.
