1,000th Baby At Bassett

Maverick James Johnson, seen here with mom, Paula Waffle and nurse Jessica Barrett, was the 1,000th baby born this year at the Bassett Birthing Center.

COOPERSTOWN – Parents Paula Waffle, Eric Johnson and the staff at the Bassett Birthing Center welcomed Maverick James Johnson, the 1,000th baby born at the center in 2017, on Tuesday, Dec. 19.

Maverick was born at 3:57 p.m. Tuesday, weighing 8 lbs, 10 oz, 21 inches long. Though born with the umbilical cord wrapped around his neck, he was able to stay at the birthing center for the first few days of his care, rather than being transported to Albany.

To celebrate the occasion, The Birthing Center presented Maverick with a specially-made blanket, as well as a basket of baby items. He will soon head home to Brookfield to join a brother and two sisters.

After a major expansion of the Birthing Center in 2011, rooms were expanded, all post-partum rooms were made private, birthing tubs were available and the Center added their own operating room. One thousand births in one year is the most births Bassett’s Birthing Center has ever had in a year’s time.
