On 500th Anniversary

Of Reformation, Debate

With the 500th anniversary of what many consider the start of the Protestant Reformation coming this Tuesday, the Rev. Paul Messner, pastor of the Otsego County Lutheran Parishes, during an ecumenical discussion at St. James Episcopal Church, Oneonta, this evening, describes a century of attempted reconciliations after Martin Luther famously nailed his 95 theses on the door of the Cathedral in Wittenberg, Germany, in 1517.   About 70 people attended the discussion, which followed a screening of the 2003 movie, “Luther,” starring Joseph Fiennes.  The 30-Years War (1618-48), ended efforts at reconciliation, said Messner, “and we didn’t talk to each other for 400 years.”  At center, Father David Mickiewicz, pastor, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Oneonta, likened what happened then to the rigidity evident in today’s political debate, with no one willing to give the other side any credit.  At left is the Rev. Vicky Hunter, St. James’ deacon and wife of the pastor, the Rev. Kenneth Hunter. (Jim Kevlin/AllOTSEGO.com)
