Sheila Wiedeman, 90; WWII War Bride
Raised 6 Children, Lost Son In Vietnam
ONEONTA – Sheila R. Wiedeman, 90, who came to Oneonta as a war bride after World War II and lost a son in the Vietnam War, passed away Thursday, Dec. 7, 201,7 in Oneonta after an extended illness.
She was born in London, England on Oct. 8, 1927, the daughter of Charles and Grace (Pettengell) Lack.
She was a World War II bride, marrying Staff Sgt. Frederick Wiedeman, USAF, on July 22, 1945.
After settling in the USA, she was a homemaker and raised six children. Sheila was a full-time mom and her children were always her top priority. She was multi-talented and enjoyed sewing, crocheting, painting ceramics and her flower gardens. She loved feeding the animals and birds in her backyard and was very fond of all her neighbors.
Sheila was predeceased by her husband, Frederick on Nov. 27, 2001, and son, Cpl. Robert A. Wiedeman, USMC, Vietnam, Feb. 25, 1968.
She is survived by sons, Rick (Mary) Weideman, Steven (Pam) Wiedeman, daughters, Susan Pizza, Barb (Bob) Purcell, Janet (Mike) Parent; grandchildren, Shelley, Darrin, Stacey, Doug, Guy, Frances and Stephanie; as well as several great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
Calling hours will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 12, in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main Street. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m.on Wednesday, Dec. 13, at the funeral home with the Rev. Stephen Fournier officiating. Burial will be private in the Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.
