SIDNEY – May 20 marks the 22nd anniversary of the day Trooper Ricky Parisian was shot and killed by Colin Hyde, who was attempting to stop a robbery at the Great American, now the Southside Mall.
And this morning, Parisian and the 16 other Troop C state police officer who gave their lives in service of their community were honored with a Memorial Day service on the lawn of the trooper barracks in Sidney.
“Their service and commitment will never be forgotten,” said Maj. James E. Barnes, Troop C commander. “But we must celebrate the lives they committed to serving our communities.”
“This is a time to remember those who have stood between us and disorder, rule of law and chaos,” said Duncan Davie, state Sen. Jim Seward’s chief of staff. “Police stand in protection of those laws.”
Davie also announced the new State Trooper Memorial Task Force, which will help provide recognition for those who died in the line of duty. “It’s a small thing, but their lives will not be forgotten.”
A wreath was laid by Kelly, Joshua and Brenna Woods, the family of Trooper Glen Woods, Endicott, who died of natural causes last March.
The Edward P. Maloney Memorial Pipe Band played “Amazing Grace,” and Investigator Aaron Lewis, Ithaca, along with his daughter, Elisabeth, played “Taps.”
