What A Woman! What A Country!

A Front Porch Perspective What A Woman! What A Country! Maybe it’s a part of “old-timers’ disease,” as the pun has it.I mean repeating myself. My poor wife puts up with a lot of it – and it’s partially the fault of my columns. In them I’ve recorded lots of my life’s last 25 years, most of them spent in Anne’s great company. And further, I’ve also drawn into them life recollections from 20, 40 and 60 years ago. I’ve…

Broadway Musicals Are Nation’s Operas, Glimmerglass Staple By LIBBY CUDMORE • Special to www.AllOTSEGO.com COOPERSTOWN – Since Francesca Zambello became general & music director at the Glimmerglass Festival in 2011, one show has been in the back of her mind. “I’ve always wanted to do ‘Show Boat’,” she said. “It’s one that I’ve always had on our docket.” The Oscar Hammerstein-penned musical, which deals with family and racism in post-Reconstruction Mississippi, is set to open the festival season this Saturday,…

It’s The Fourth Of July! Sample The American Sandwich: Hamburgers

FINE FOOD, FUN FOOD It’s The Fourth Of July! Sample American’s Sandwich, The Not-So-Humble Hamburger I ordered Lizard Lick’s Lower Deck burger, which has “zesty lizard bbq,” crumbled bleu cheese, lettuce, and tomato. The lizard BBQ, spread liberally on both sides of the bun, tasted sweet, rather than ‘zesty” (which, to me, connotes a more tangy, spicy sauce), but that worked well with the blue cheese’s saltiness. And I don’t normally notice a burger’s lettuce and tomatoes that much, but…

The Grove Would Improve Site

Letter from RICHARD BLABEY The Grove Would Improve Site To the Editor: At the Cooperstown Village Board meeting Monday, June 24, many residents voiced concern regarding a proposed project to build a 12-unit apartment building at 10 Chestnut St. A core complaint was that this high-density residential project was too massive and not compatible with their neighborhood. The proposed planned development contains two properties. Construction is only being proposed for the larger of the two. It is 50 feet wide…

‘Green Light’ Bill Facing Clerks’ Anger

‘Green Light’ Bill Facing Clerks’ Anger By JIM KEVLIN• Special to www.AllOTSEGO.com COOPERSTOWN – By presstime, no word had been received from President Trump’s regional representation on whether the Justice Department will go to court to stop New York State’s “Green Light” law from going into effect Dec. 14. The “Green Light” law would require the state’s county clerks who operate state Department of Motor Vehicle offices locally to issue driver’s licenses to what some people call undocumented residents and…

Energy Task Force Goal: To Avoid Us Vs. Them

from the ENERGY TASK FORCE Energy Task Force Goal: To Avoid Us Vs. Them To the Editor: Your June 20-21 editorial on the Otsego County Energy Taskforce ends with the sentence: “We’re all in this together.” We on the Taskforce Leadership Committee couldn’t agree more. But the editorial’s main assertion that the business community has been shut out of the process is not based on fact and includes inaccuracies and unhelpful hypotheticals that need to be corrected. Chief among these…
