Gilbertsville History Exhibit: A Remembrance of Things Past

Photographs are an important part of the exhibit. There is a small picture album from the Presbyterian Church featuring photos from Gilbertsville’s sesquicentennial. Many nostalgia-producing photo postcards depict village residences then occupied by William N. Dietz, Mrs. E.S. Frone and James B. NY State Assembly Recognizes Local Historian for Her Work

Eckmair was specifically acknowledged for her involvement in a research project which ultimately quashed an Army Corps of Engineers plan to install a series of dams in the Butternut Valley. According to the citation, these dams would have created a 7-mile-long lake, thus “flooding the entire village and most of the Butternut Valley and over 4,000 years of Native American civilization.” Congress deauthorized the monies appropriated for the plan in 1979.…

Parade, Fireworks Celebrate GFD’s 150th Anniversary

The GFD’s “attack truck,” known as “Big Mike,” was accompanied by the department’s other vehicles—a tanker and a brush truck. Leigh Eckmair, 1743 Palatine House Win Otsego 2000 Preservation Prizes ROSEBOOM – Otsego 2000’s 2015 Preservation Advocate Award this evening will be presented to Leigh Eckmair, Town of Butternuts and Village of Gilbertsville historian, for “working tirelessly for more than 25 years to restore and maintain the beauty” of her communities.
